Polyspun Filters
Polyspun (or melt-blown) filter cartridges are made from layers of spun polypropylene fibers, designed to trap particles throughout the depth of the filter.
They Filter sediment (sand, dirt, rust, silt), fine particulates and are ideal for pre-filtration in multi-stage systems
Pros: Depth filtration captures particles at multiple levels, high efficiency and dift-holding capacity, resistant to chemicals and affordable
Note: Not suitable for removing chlorine, chemicals, or dissolved substances. Often used as the first stage in a filtration setup.

Carbon Filters
Carbon filter cartridges use activated carbon to remove impurities through adsorption.
They Filter chlorine and chloramine (improves taste and odor), VOCs, some pesticides, sediment (minor) and some heavy metals.
Pros: Improves taste and smell, affordable and easy to maintain, great for general water quality
Note: Not effective against dissolved salts, most bacteria, or viruses. Best used as part of a multi-stage system.
Some carbon filters are impregnated with silver to help prevent bacterial buildup

Pleated Filters
Pleated filter cartridges are designed with folded (pleated) material to increase surface area, making them effective for capturing particles from water.
They Filter sediment (dirt, sand, rust, silt), larger particulates and some microorganisms (depending on micron rating)
Pros: High dirt-holding capacity, in some cases can be washable, maintain good water flow with minimal pressure drop
Note: Not effective for removing chemicals, chlorine, or dissolved contaminants. Best used as a pre-filter in multi-stage systems.
Filter FAQs
How often do I need to change the filter cartridge?
It depends on the type of filter, water usage and water quality. On average sediment filters should be replaced every 3-6 months, carbon filters every 6-12 months and reverse osmosis membranes every 1-2 years
Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and monitor for reduced water flow or changes in taste
How can I tell if my filter needs replacing sooner?
Signs include:
- Drop in water pressure
- Bad taste or odor returning
- Discoloration in water
- Visible dirt or discoloration on the cartridge (for sediment filters)
Can I clean and reuse filter cartridges?
Some pleated sediment filters can be rinsed and reused a few times, but most cartridges—especially polyspun and carbon—are disposable and should be replaced to maintain effectiveness.
What happens if I don’t change my filter regularly?
Overused filters can become clogged, reducing water pressure and allowing contaminants to bypass the system. In some cases, bacteria can grow on old filters, leading to potential health risks.
Are all filter cartridges universal or interchangeable?
Many filters are a one of the standard sizes and will be interchangeable between brands of the same filter size, type and fitting.
Always check compatibility with your filtration system’s specifications before purchasing replacements.
